Our Background…

Now, this couple believes that the truth found in Holy Scripture is straight from the mouth of the Triune God (being three in one) and penned by “Holy men of God…moved by the Holy Ghost”. The Bible is self-explanatory, and with the help of Strong’s Concordance, will provide answers to what the we see as a frustrating and distressing situation in our encounters with the “modern church” which has deeply affected our personal lives.

So, in the summer of 2003, in our “free time”, we started to write our thoughts about this as it related to “Galatians” and approached it on a verse-by-verse basis. About halfway through the first chapter, we noticed that more than a journal, it had evolved into both an act of worship (primarily for Carl, for Sarah employs other means as well) and also a personal “Pilgrimage” into the Word of God via Paul’s Epistle to discover the basis of what we are observing today.

In addition, it must be stated that though we attend a particular church, the frustration continues even there. We are beholden to no denomination. Christians are Christians and should not be identified by a denominational name. Furthermore, which may be to the consternation of “religious scholars”, the authors are not even engaged in what one would call “full or part time Christian service”.

We are only people elected and given eternal life by the Triune God and specifically called by God the Father, sanctified by God the Holy Spirit and forever saved and preserved in Jesus Christ, the eternal Word, Mediator, Son of God and Son of Man. Since God is Triune as to His being, it is difficult to simply compartmentalize and assign function so arbitrarily to such a Self-Existent God.

Now, Carl works as a health care professional utilizing the wisdom of God, which comes through the Person of the Holy Spirit/Ghost (interchangeable words), rather than the wisdom of men, which comes from the world, and, before Him, is only foolishness. Being rooted in a scientific materialistic background from his prior pagan life for 37 years, and not having a more complete understanding until years later, he realized that back in 1981 he had been mercifully saved from the wrath of God to come and, without ever asking for it, given His everlasting life.

At that time, he was blessed immediately by the Lord Jesus with a hunger and a thirst to seek and know the truth, and to understand Him through His written Word. Without ceasing and despite personal difficulties, this has continued to this day. He was also gifted with a prophetic ability to discern a problem, analyze it in light of the truths contained in Holy Scripture, and suggest a solution, and as was the case of the Prophet Jeremiah, it was oftentimes unpopular to the ears of those who were in the position of authority to effect change in the church.

Not knowing which of many translations available to read, a Bible College professor had suggested the use of the New American Standard Bible (NASB). At that same time, the Lord gave him a gorgeous and godly woman named “Sarah” with the same zeal to know Him. Acquiring a significant physical handicap as the result of a birth injury involving coordination so as to preclude walking, she has been forced to use a wheelchair for most of her life.

When she was nine years old, the Lord opened the eyes of her understanding to see she was in need of a Savior to deliver her from the future wrath of God. That Savior is, of course, the Lord Jesus Christ. Sarah, though younger than Carl by a number of years, has known the Lord Jesus for a longer period of time. It was obvious to Carl that Sarah, like Barnabas, had the gift of exhortation and she uses this gift to encourage others in the Body of Christ to study the Word of God – though her words more often than not, fall on “ears that don’t hear” or “hardened worldly hearts”.

In June of 1986, we were married. Over the course of the years, adhering to a Christian model, Carl provided and Sarah kept the home. We attended churches of all kinds having a desire to have true fellowship with a local body of believers and find this “Jesus” as described in the Scriptures as being present and significant in other peoples’ lives as well. Rather, after 20+ years of constant rejection by the visible church and its members, because we wanted to engage in conversation centering on the Person and Work of our Lord Jesus Christ in the context of Scripture alone, and not in social dialogue on worldly topics as baseball, work, children, family, etc., it became painfully obvious that the “Jesus” of the Scriptures was not to be found there.

There was no real power in the message of salvation coming from the pulpit to the unsaved concerning deliverance from the wrath of God which will come on both them and the world if they refuse to hear and believe. Looking back on this, it seemed ill-advised and contrary to Scripture that any worship service should serve as a venue to “win people to Christ”.

Instead, what was found were worldly social programs with “catchy names” and the word “ministry” added to lend the appearance of legitimacy to deal with serious life problems. Even worse was a general lack of interest in other church goers to fellowship, pray, study and meditate on His written Word alone, apart from prepared materials issued by the church.

To top it all off was the need to bring in a famous outside “big gun” to conduct seminars – for a price – as though there was no one within that particular body qualified to lead. Was not the message of the Lord Jesus “good news” to its recipients? (Later, the authors will analyze the word “gospel” to see if it really was intended to mean merely “good news” or something of far greater significance.) Rather, we heard in the church and also in the television and radio media what we will surname, an “Incomplete Jesus”.

Now, all along, Carl had been consulting either the NASB, NIV (New International Version) and other “modern” translations in an effort to satisfy this ongoing hunger to know whom we will refer to as the “Complete Jesus”. His wife, the astute woman that she is, had always used the King James Bible. Since Carl treated patients in their homes, in 1997 we decided to purchase audio cassettes of the Bible both for listening while in transit between patients and also for Sarah’s convenience due to her disability.

The cheapest available were the tapes of the King James Version read by Alexander Scourby. Not listening to the wisdom of his wife, he had been initially “turned off” to the KJV in earlier years due to its supposed “archaic” English. But, with increased listening time, absent from outside bias, he began to see a different “Jesus” than who had been described in the other modern translations.

This “Jesus” of the now 400 year-old King James Bible as described by the Prophets and Apostles, is truly God the Son and, “without controversy”, the “King of kings and Lord of lords”. He is Love Incarnate, but also Holy, Just, Wrathful, Jealous for His own, Vengeful toward His enemies, Separate and yet, also as the Son of Man, at His incarnation, He became a part of His own creation. These are not mere flowery words to fill space on a sheet of paper, but realities that can be perceived as taking place today and being witnessed by those who have “eyes to see and ears to hear”.

Sadly, the “modern church”, not desiring to recognize the timeless nature of the Scriptures and its Author, feels the need to keep pace with the changing times. Subsequently, they have updated the timeless Word of God as well as the facilities – now equipped with state-of-the-art electronic equipment to maximize the propensities of the flesh. Many have employed slick advertising to bring in prospects and adopted unconventional seating arrangements to create a nightclub atmosphere.

This, of course, takes money. Now, offended people will never give of their means. Therefore, the cardinal rule is not to displease anyone. However, this poses a problem. If quoted directly in preaching, the King James Version can be offensive at times to unregenerate man and its English is, supposedly, too archaic. There go the people who were looking for a social life with others of like morality.

Well, this called for a modernization and the removal of offensive material from the Biblical text in order to maximize attendance – as well as profits to book publishers. Being translated very close to the Traditional Text used in the early church, the specific language of the King James Bible often runs contrary to our sensibilities and thus had to be altered to suit the dictates of an evolving universal and ecumenical church.

These modern texts, both Old and New Testament alike, used by the Protestant churches, were introduced around the 1880’s. They are rooted in Gnostic and Unitarian and not Trinitarian belief about the nature of the Godhead. Unitarianism, a false doctrine supported and propagated by heretics such as Origen, Eusebius of Alexandria, Arius and others throughout the centuries of the Christian era, even up until our day, including the times of the birth of our nation, supposed that God could only exist as one Person – not three.

Thus, our Lord Jesus was not co-equal with the Father but was only a created being. If this was the case, in their erroneous view, He could not have been an all-sufficient Savior and thus salvation is really a contingent partnership between God and man – a perfect recipe for the “modern church”.

That describes legalism plus lies. If these are to be taken as indicators of an ever-growing apostasy in the “modern church”, this would mean that the prophetic command of the Sovereign and Self-Existent Triune God has granted permission to the powers of darkness, in concert with their human representatives, by any means possible, including the use of altered Bibles, to become increasingly successful at representing to the world-at-large (excluding true believers who will never be permanently deceived), an “Incomplete Jesus”.

This “another Jesus” is not totally God and Man at the same time, the same who completed an absolute once-for-all-time work of redemption on the Cross of Calvary for a limited number of His totally fallen and spiritually dead creation, and rose again the third day, according to the Scriptures. Anything different from this makes salvation a conditional work of man, and not wholly of God.

Thus, it will be proved that Paul’s statement is certainly true today that “the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, Who is the image of God, should shine unto them”.

Just who or what is “God” and to whom shall one compare Him? This is a question that was on the mind of Carl for many years. His natural beliefs acquired from parental upbringing and the world were inconsistent and full of paradoxes. Outwardly, he essentially believed that people had evolved from the apes, materialistic science held all the answers for life and that there was really no personal and accessible God. “Jesus Christ” was merely a swear word.

Yet, inwardly, he greatly feared death and the future prospect of a horrible existence either in or beyond the grave. He would hide his inward fears and say outwardly like the atheist – a most deceived person and a fool – that “god” is merely a projection of man’s mind and psyche in a futile effort to ascribe deity to something greater than himself. Instead, he had taken to heart the song that most of us learned as little children: “Row, row, row your boat, gently down the stream. Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily, life is but a dream”. Life seemed more like a bad dream with a nightmarish end.

Now, man in his natural state seems to be basically striving for meaning and purpose in life. It is that “something” which is just beyond his grasp. To attain that “something”, he strives for perfection. He wants to be perfect, at least in something – a perfect athlete, a perfect worker, a perfect entertainer, a perfect father, a perfect mother, even a perfect criminal. He is ever-reaching forward and wants to think of himself as having significance in this world.

Humans want to be admired by others and at the same time worship someone or something. We surround ourselves with material possessions in an effort to gain stability and security. The question is, “Has he bought the lie of Genesis 3:1-5 which reads thus: “Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil”. In other words, by the knowledge of good and evil, man can attain the status of a god – so says the serpent, the prince of darkness and deceiver par excellence.

Again, does God really exist? Are the atheists correct? They say there is no God. But, in reality, they are intellectually dishonest. Have they not really made themselves “little gods” in thinking that they possess all the information available to flatly deny the existence of a Supreme Being? A more honest answer would be to say, “I really don’t know”- classifying themselves as “agnostic”, a Greek word meaning “without knowledge”.

Now, despite what is propagated on the airwaves, which for the most part, assumes no god and thus no accountability for bad behavior, most Americans would disagree and say “yes, there is a god”. It has been reported that about 95% of Americans believe in “god” – hence the motto on our coinage “In God we trust”.

However, when one reads or discusses this topic with others, in or out of church, the attributes of this “god” appear far too human and subject to error and human frailties – “the man upstairs” is a common expression. This flawed description has to be a convoluted and distant memory of the True God etched in our twisted minds. If God truly exists as an entity other than in our own distant thoughts, He must have left and would continue to leave hard core evidence as to His ongoing nature and being, just as Paul wrote in Romans, Chapter One.

For Carl personally, there were two determining factors for His existence: (1) an ongoing fear of death with future judgment for behavior which served to motivate him to search for the answer found in (2); the compelling eyewitness evidence for the Resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ as presented in the Bible. Upon reflection, this correlated with the idea of sovereign election (to be discussed later) and the extent of the depravity of the human race.

In the Bible, the “wicked” are described as those who have “no fear of God before their eyes”. It is evidenced all around us today. “There is [truly] no fear of God before their eyes”. Well, this “atheistic” husband did have a fear of God before his eyes and the picture of judgment and beyond was horrible – not so with his wife who had an awareness of God, but also of hell and a fiery judgment, from her very early years.

Now, it was this fear that drove him to search for and discover the true Author of Life. For Carl, in 1981 the search for the real God and His Son Jesus began in earnest. For reasons to be discussed, the modern Biblical translations used initially did not have the “ring of truth” concerning the Self-Existent, Thrice Holy Triune God. As noted previously, after about 15 years in the faith, he was, in a very literal sense, “supernaturally led” to the King James Bible. There seemed to be a “ring of truth” to it.

Not because of the “thees and thous”, pronouns necessary for the text, but because of its emphasis on the deity of “God manifest in the flesh”. This translation, based on the Ben Chayyim Masoretic Hebrew Bible and the Textus Receptus, historically traceable writings, accurately described a God who is first of all, Sovereign and Self-Existent. Being Triune regarding His person, He is not lonely and does not depend on man’s acceptance of Him for His happiness.

This God is also Holy and Pure and cannot and will not tolerate evil, though He has willed and does use evil events to accomplish His purposes and bring glory to Himself and to those He has chosen. His attributes include Omnipotence, Omnipresence, Omniscience and Immutability. In other words, God is All-Powerful, Always Present Everywhere, All-Knowing and Unchangeable. All of creation live and move and have their being in Him, but not to be understood that all are going to be saved from His future wrath.

God is never taken by surprise and never fails His intended purpose, down to the minutest detail, because of man’s bad attitude or non-response. In fact, He also willed those things to come to pass. While God cannot lie, He can and does send a lying spirit to deceive nonbelievers from time to time. All of creation is for His own glory. “Surely the wrath of man shall praise [Him]: the remainder of wrath shalt [He] restrain.” He is totally “Other”. He has no beginning or end. This means that He is infinite, in absolute control of, and not confined to space, time or history.

Most of all, to preserve His holiness and purity, He cannot and will not be approached directly by man – particularly by means of human effort. This characteristic completely demands that He must be at least Triune in His Existence as Father (the Originator and Source), Son (the Mediator and Implementor) and Holy Ghost (the Life Giver, Comforter and Revealer of truth). Human language, however, especially modern English, cannot fully describe the infinite nature of this Triune God.

How can the authors make such claims? They are all subjective in nature! The answer: The overwhelming and thus compelling evidence for the life, death, resurrection and ascension of Jesus of Nazareth in fulfillment of statements concerning this written centuries earlier and recorded in both the Old and New Testaments.

The King James Holy Bible with its unique language to best approximate the original texts alone describes such a God as this God. All other English translations or dynamic equivalent paraphrases subsequent to the KJV, in one form or another, for their own personal and selfish reasons, motivated chiefly by money and ultimately rooted in Unitarianism and Gnosticism, attack the full and absolute deity and unity of all three Persons of the Godhead.

These conclusions were reached by the grace and mercy of the Spirit of God alone acting on Carl since, unlike his wife, he the did not begin his Christian experience and life with this translation. As noted before, it took about 15 years of searching for truth, where, looking retrospectively, it was not to be found. Perchance, or better stated, by the “determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God”, he began to listen to the King James on audio cassette. In listening to and reading this version, he got the sense of the absolute reality of the attributes of God as previously written, as well as the totality of man’s hopelessness apart of the mercy and grace of God.

Now, knowing that the Apostle Paul was serious when he said that it is God, and not man, who “worketh all things after the counsel of His own will”, it behooves one to heed the instruction of Isaiah the Prophet where he wrote, “Sanctify the LORD of Hosts Himself: and let Him be your fear, and let Him be your dread. And He shall be for a sanctuary”.

This couple truly went on a journey of discovery about the “modern church” through Paul’s Epistle to the Galatian churches. “Galatians Pilgrimage” has taken about 10 years and is ongoing. Careful thought and prayer to the Lord was made to enable us to gain insights perhaps not covered before by prior writers. Under, we believe, the guidance of the Holy Ghost within who leads the ardent seeker into all truth, almost every topic and word were explored by consulting other passages in both the Old and New Testaments.

For the most part, no other commentaries were used except possibly just to gain an understanding of historical background. Influential books are listed in the Bibliography. Since the Holy Bible should be considered a legal document and are “pure words”, the words of which will be used on Judgment Day, it follows that the text that is traceable and used in the early church is the legitimate text.

For this reason and after much research, the authors concluded that the King James Version is the legitimate Bible for the English-speaking people and that their translators, unlike many today, were godly Christian men first and academics a close second. For those in countries speaking a different language, consult the front section of your Bible to make sure the underlying text is the Greek “Textus Receptus”  for the New Testament. For the Old Testament, It will be the Hebrew Daniel Bomberg 2nd Edition of 1524-25, edited by Jacob Ben Chayyim iben Adonijah, or better known as the “Ben Chayyim Masoretic Hebrew Bible”.  Carl and Sarah often consulted “Webster’s 1828 Dictionary” as well as the “4th Edition of Webster’s New World Dictionary and Thesaurus” to gain an understanding of English words and their origin.

Since the true Author is God Himself, Carl and Sarah learned by “guided” experience that all Scripture is written in the context of other Scripture and must be understood in that manner only. In addition, Scripture serves to clarify other Scripture. Cults, religious denominations and heresies are formed by lifting a single verse or group of verses out of its context to make it say something never intended by its writer, oftentimes saying just the opposite.

So, to understand the meaning of a word or passage, the Holy Ghost led the authors, via the Concordance, to explore the context in other sections of the Bible. After all was said and done, the reader must keep in mind that this is first of all a personal “Galatians Pilgrimage” to gain an inner understanding about life and death and the hereafter. We have no desire to debate with others as to our findings, but are, at the same time, looking for those with a kindred spirit.

Carl’s experience with the organized church after being saved in 1981, that of rejection at every turn, was so destabilizing that it caused him to believe that God had actually rejected him – a lie he still wrestles with. He had to turn from the teachings of men combined with Biblical truth to the Source of all truth. By coming to understand sound doctrine, that teaching which proceeds from the mouth of the Almighty and comes in the form of precepts – “for precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little” – a word picture has been etched by the Holy Ghost in his mind and heart to enable this insecure individual who had lived life according to feelings and personal thoughts coming from his deceived heart to gain his ultimate anchor in the unchangeable nature of the Triune God and the rock solid security found under the New Covenant.

His wife, while she did not experience those kinds of struggles, continues to have her own battles. But both agree there is no need to impress or please others any more or try to “win souls to Jesus” motivated by guilt feelings. He builds His church, not man. He uses the “foolishness of preaching to save them that believe”. “As many as were ordained to eternal life [will] believe”. Thus, we are to preach the gospel to all creation and teach the converts.

“This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men will be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boastful, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, without natural affection, truce breakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, traitors, heady, high minded, lovers of pleasures rather than lovers of God; having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such, turn away.”

Oftentimes, people have mistaken this passage to refer to the world and its culture at large. But as we shall see, the Apostle Paul was already living in a culture that mirrored this description. Thus, most likely what he was picturing, under the inspiration of the Holy Ghost within him, was a legalistic and outwardly religious visible church professing Christ, yet being without Him – much like the church at Ephesus. The tares are in control and the wheat have been marginalized. In his day, it was under the influence of Jews zealous for the law; but as time has moved forward, it has become subject to all sorts of “evil men and seducers”.

In the last century and continuing into the present, the whirlwind of legalism and lies is rapidly gaining momentum. The result is a mass falling away resulting in apostasy from the absolute truth which is only to be found in Jesus, the Living Word of God, Who is the incarnation and embodiment of truth and communicated accurately in the King James Bible.

May the Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of Glory, the Way, the Truth and the Life through the power of His Holy Spirit, sent from Him and the Father, who has exercised great mercy on this couple, by means of this “Galatians Pilgrimage”, cause them to reflect accurately and communicate what we sincerely believe to be God’s message of warning to the “modern church”. May all the glory to be given unto HIM… Amen
